Thrill Rides
Flight of Fear
Launched at Kings Dominion in 1996, Flight of Fear defined a new generation of roller coasters and has since won three awards from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. Manufactured by Premier Rides, it combines a technologically advanced Linear Induction Motor (LIM) launch system with a totally enclosed track and unique ride theme.
Premier Rides built several of these LIM catapult roller coasters from 1996 to 1999, yet only two—Flight of Fear at Kings Dominion and its counterpart at Kings Island—are indoors. The ride’s layout packs four inversions into a 2,764-foot maze of steel track—at speeds of up to 60mph.
Proceed to “Area 47,” after heeding the distinct warning: “You are entering a government security zone. Area under constant surveillance.” Move into the hangar and onto a large UFO. As you reach the boarding station, you’ll notice something odd. The train returns to the loading platform. . .empty! Once on the train, you’ll accelerate rapidly while linear induction magnets propel you into almost total darkness. Before the final brake run, you’ll fly through a cobra roll, a sidewinder, a corkscrew, and dozens of terrifying twist and turns. It’s two and a half minutes of sheer, pulse-pounding fear!
